The Magazine in the Attic
Brenda Deeter got her start as an artist when she and her husband, Eric, bought an old Victorian style house in Silver Lake, KS (about an hour west of Kansas City). They got a good deal because the rehab was only half-way completed. They moved in and went to work on the house. It took all their spare time, and every extra dollar went for construction materials. The budget was busted when it came time for decorating.
Poking around in the attic, Brenda found an old magazine. An article talked about someone who’d done “color washing”. Brenda said, “Paint is cheap,” and went to work on her first faux finish project. She worked hard to get it right. She experimented with faux painting in other rooms. Sometimes she had to paint over everything and start again, but she developed good DIY skills and had a good eye for color.
From DIY to Pro
A few years later, Brenda needed to make a career change. Eric signed them both up for their first faux finish class. Brenda came home energized. All the amateur faux finishes went away, and she began her journey as a professional artist. She and Eric formed MorningStar Home Specialists. Brenda worked as a faux finish artist and Eric did remodeling and handy man work.
Faux Finish Specialists
Faux finishing took over the business, and Eric shut down the remodeling and handyman work to assist Brenda. Together they created a host of commission works. They committed to weeks of training each year at top schools around the country. They’ve applied their work on floors, ceilings, walls, cabinets, doors, furniture, woodwork, bricks, concrete, counter tops, and art canvas. Brenda often says, “If it stands still long enough, we can paint it.”
Cabinet refinishing was a part of their business since the start. They applied the same attention to detail and product knowledge to kitchen cabinets and furniture. The recent demand for kitchen cabinet refinishing didn’t catch them off guard. They simply shifted their focus to cabinets rather than walls.
